Here's what Jeff thinks the tech sector will bring us in 2021 Each year, I like to take an appearance at the huge picture and predict what's just around the corner. Longtime readers of my work understand that I follow the most exciting tech trends on the verge of mass adoption.
These trends are experiencing exponential growth and creating unbelievable opportunities for investors. I want to ensure all our readers are prepared for what's next. And with that in mind, let me draw the photo of what I see can be found in the next 12 months 1. 5G Devices Our brand-new 5G (fifth-generation) wireless networks are a subject I have actually been covering for years now.
Even though the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains in 2015, an impressive 250 million 5G-enabled gadgets were still sold. Especially in the second quarter, there were supply chain disturbances, making hold-ups, and work stoppages. And all of this ultimately led to Apple postponing the release of the 5G-enabled i, Phone 12 by two months.
When you think about all of that, selling 250 million units is exceptional. More importantly, the delays triggered by the pandemic created a lots of bottled-up need. And that demand is now going to be pressed into 2021. In reality, I predict that more than 500 million 5G devices will be shipped in 2021.
Stage Three of 5G When I've spoken about 5G in the past, I have actually explained its 3 different stages. In Stage One, the facilities of these brand-new networks is built out, including all the new towers and fiber-optic wiring that 5G will need. In Phase 2, 5G devices go on sale.
And in Stage 3, 5G services start to be used. That's when we start to see applications working on 5G networks. Think of things like massive multiplayer video games over a cellphone. That's not possible with 4G. It will be with 5G. And my second 5G prediction for 2021 is that we will begin Phase Three by this summertime.
More and more consumers will go out to buy a 5G phone to access these applications. 5G is going to open up a suite of unbelievable applications: self-driving automobiles, the Web of Things, robotic surgical treatment, and more.
The investment chances going forward will be huge. CRISPR Genetic Modifying Stepping away from 5G, the next essential technology I foresee in 2021 is CRISPR genetic modifying. It's one of the most interesting advancements in biotechnology.
